I cannot help it, but all of these pictures from @sagathingpodcast’s recent trip to Iceland has me reminiscing about my own trip from around the same time. Looking at this picture, however, most people see a dreary and barren landscape from the depopulating region of the Westfjords. At the time, I was standing on a great mound in Haukadalur (or so that’s what I deemed it to be at the time) looking inward towards the surrounding mountains. . . . The air had grown cold with the coming clouds, but my eagerness kept me warm as I hiked—my mind’s eye did not see an empty land. Instead, my mind imagined the events of Gisli’s Saga, for this was very spot (according to the saga itself as well as local lore) where Gisli Sursson and his family once lived. More traumatic events happened here, of course, but I’ll save such stories for another time, since I do plan to write a blog post about my pilgrimage to this location someday soon. I just learned about this today while preparing a new tea over @thenorthernherbalist called Frigg’s Comfort. At least based on Clemens saga, the Old Icelandic term for Venus was ‘Friggjar stjarna,’ or Frigg’s Star. Although our sources are a bit scarce about medical practices in the medieval North, this is one of my favorite topics to explore. We spend a lot of time talking about how the Vikings raided and plundered across Europe and beyond, but time is seldom devoted to how the Norse healed themselves and others. The beginnings of a new digital map project following Nikolas Bergsson’s pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land in the 1150s. Nikolas was the abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Thvera in northern Iceland during that time, but his vernacular pilgrim itinerary (called Leiðarvísir, or “Guide”) survives now in manuscripts from the later medieval period.
